Early November to mid-November is the best time for autumn colors in Kenrokuen garden. These photos are taken at Yamazakiyama hill.
New landmark of 21st Centry Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa was open to the public. The facility is designed by Japanese architect Kazuyo Sejima. It is named Pavilion Glob MARU. I had two tour guide services for Australian couple and Italian travel agent on Nov 22nd and 23rd, 2016 respectively. We took photos inside and outside the facility. Nov 22 was an unexpectedly warm, fine day. Nov 23rd was unusually cold day, but we had no rain. We were lucky.
We encoutered with New Year’s fire drill, when I showed around Kanazawa castle area to my overseas customers on Jan.10,2016. New Year’s fire fighters ceremonial training were undertaken by personnel related to firefighting. This training is called ” Dezomeshiki “. Kagatobi fire drill were also taken place. It’s an acrobatic exercise. Kagatobi were originally firefighters that were hired by Kaga-domain in Edo, present Tokyo. They protected the residence of Kaga-domain in Edo from fire. So, it has a long history since the Edo period.
We see a white tower from the observation point of Kenrokuen garden. I was often asked about the white tower located in the middle of Utastuyama hill by my customers. Nehru Jawaharlal, ex- Prime Minister of India presented Bone of Buddha to Japan in 1954, about 10 years after World War 2. This pagoda was constructed in 1974, about 20 years after receiving Buddha’s Bone from Nehru. This pagoda is the symbol of praying for recovery of Japan from shambles after WW2, and of praying for forever-lasting World Peace.
I saw a heron perch on a rock. The rock is situated on Horaijima island. The heron has its territory in Kenrokuen garden. I often see the heron at Kasumigaike pond ( Misty pond ) and Hyisagoike pond ( Gourd-shaped pond ). Four ladies from Australia enjoyed two-day tour. One day was for Kanazawa. The next day was for Shogawa river cruise ship and Gokayama Gassho village. They are all cheerful ladies, and good walkers. They called me ” Mr. T “. It sounded comfortable for me, and easy to pronounce. I liked to be called ” Mr. T ” , which comes from my name ” Takashi ” , of course. T also sounds like ” Tea ” of Tea Ceremony.
When I showed overseas tourists around Higashi-Chaya Geisha District, they wanted to see a scene of roof tiles. Roofs on the wooden buildings in the Hokuriku region are covered with traditional shining black tiles. A roof tile is made of clay. Clay is formed to a shape of roof tile, and dried, and glazed, and fired at the temperature of 1,000 to 1,250 degrees Celsius. Another characteristic is that some tiles have arch-like hooks to prevent snow from sliding down to the ground so that not to harm walkers on a road.
Kanazawa Wagasa, a Japanese umbrella is one of the traditional arts and crafts in Kanazawa. Wagasa artisan is disappearing, bacause only one aged artisan is maintaining the making skill here. A group of young artisans organize a study group to preserve the skill. I bought the umbrella from ” wagasa minto” on a special order. About 3 months were needed to be completed. Australian sisters took a photo in front of tsuzumi – mon gate of JR Kanazawa station. I hope this umbrella add one attraction to my tour.
