Shirakawa-go village consists of a group of three or four story-wooden
buildings of farmhouses. There are 60 Gassho farmhouses in this village.
They are called Gasshozukuri houses that literally mean the gesture of
bringing palms of hands together in prayer. Visiting one well-known farmhouses
will give us further understanding of the inside structures.
Takayama is one of the popular tourist destinations in Japan. Lord Kanamori
spent 16 years to construct the merchant quarters that are still remained
intact. The town was designed reflecting Kyoto town planning. Lord Kanamori
also supported cultural development such as the tea ceremony, and traditional
crafts such as Shunkei lacquerware and porcelain. The Kanamori ruling lasted
for 107 years. All of a sudden the Edo shougunate relocated the lord Kanamori
to the Tohoku region in 1692, and governed the Hida region for 177 years
until 1867. Since then Takayama flourished as a merchant town under the
Edo government ruling. Merchant houses of the Edo period still remain today
in Sannomachi street These areas are designated as the preservation districts
for groups of traditional buildings. The latticework windows of merchant
houses, which are painted black Bengara , give us an atmosphere of old
good day Japan.
